Kathmandu: At least two people have been killed and 20 others are missing in floods in Sindhupalchowk district after heavy rains.
The floods have washed away more than 20 houses, blocked the Arani highway in some places and damaged about half a dozen vehicles.
The bodies of Nikesh Basnet, 20, of Barhabise Municipality-5 and his one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Niuna Basnet were found when the local Jambu River flooded, said DSP Madhav Prasad Kafle of District Police Office, Sindhupalchowk. Nikesh's wife Savina Basnet, who was critically injured, has been brought to Kathmandu by Kailash helicopter for treatment.
The floods of Jambu River have caused more damage in Barhabise Municipality-5 and Bulukute Thado River has caused more damage in Bhotekoshi Municipality-5. Sixteen people have gone missing in Barhabise-5 Jambu Bazaar and four in Bhotekoshi Municipality.
Bhim Bahadur Vaiva, Chinmaya Vaiva, Lilamaya Vaiva, Pasang Dolma Vaiva, Nima Dolma Vaiva, Laxman Vaiva, Sanmala Vaiva, Janak Bahadur Thing, Savina Tamang, Akash Tamang, Tok Bahadur Tamang, Salini Tamang, Suvesh Tamang and Yukta Bahadur Tamang of Barhabise Municipality-5 are missing. Police said. Similarly, Himesh Sharma, secretary of Madhyabhotekoshi Hydropower Company and Akash KC, engineer of JICA have also gone missing, said DSP Kafle.
Nima Dorje Tamang, 60, her daughter-in-law Manju Tamang, 27, grandchildren Pasang Nurbu Tamang, 9, and Sahil Tamang, 6, have gone missing after the flood in Bulukute Thado River at Bulukute Jyale in Bhotekoshi Village Municipality-5. Her son Phurba and her 10-day-old daughter were also injured in the incident. There is damage to a dozer and a jeep.
Five persons have been injured in Barhabise-5 Jambu due to floods. Two are seriously injured. The floods have damaged 15 houses here.
Traffic has been blocked in Khursanibari of Barhabise Municipality-3 as the Bhotekoshi River has cut off the Arani Highway.
Similarly, a concrete bridge on the Arani Highway at a place called Khagdal has been cut 15 meters by the Khagdal River. There are 10/11 houses, a garage, a vehicle, a tanker, a truck carrying tar from the road department and a bus have been swept away.
Similarly, Bhotekoshi River has cut 100 meters of road near Barhabise Municipality-8 Jura. Five houses have been flooded in Balefi village municipality-7 of Sindhupalchowk district.
Jyalekhola has cut roads in various places in Bhotekoshi village municipality-5. DSP Kafle informed that the Arani highway was blocked due to the accumulation of soil brought by the floods.
