A new minister has been appointed after ministers from the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Socialist Party (CPN-S) resigned. After the old ministers resigned, new ones were appointed as they could not withstand the pressure from within the party. Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Prem Ale and Urban Development Minister Ram Kumari Jhankri had resigned saying that they would facilitate the implementation of the party’s decision.
After Ale and Jhankri resigned, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba appointed five people recommended by the CPN-S. Jeevan Ram Shrestha has been given the charge of culture, tourism and civil aviation, Sher Bahadur Kunwar the charge of labor, employment and social security, Bhavani Khapung the charge of health and population and Metmani Chaudhary the charge of urban development. Similarly, Hira KC has been made the Minister of State for Health. This news is published in today’s citizen daily.
Minister for Health and Population Virodh Khatiwada and Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security Kisan Shrestha did not resign but were replaced by new ministers. He did not resign, saying the new minister would resign automatically. At a meeting of the CPN-S’s Politburo and Central Committee, four ministers in the government were sharply criticized for disobeying the party’s decision.
Even top party leaders criticized the ministers for rejecting the party’s decision. The party had recommended Shrestha as the Minister of Culture, Kunwar as the Minister of Labor, Khapung as the Minister of Health, Chaudhary as the Minister of State for Urban Development and KC as the Minister of State for Health. The recommendation has been implemented in 22 days.
