Barekot landslide: 40 houses displaced, search for missing continues

Jajarkot: Forty families have been displaced in Barekot of Jajarkot after a landslide swept away the village. According to police, 32 houses in Barekot-4 and eight houses in Gothgaon have been displaced after the landslide started moving near their houses. District Police Chief DSP Kishor Shrestha informed that they were kept in two local schools. Many homes are still at risk because the water has not stopped.
Seven people have been killed when a landslide swept away two houses in Barekot-4 circuit on Thursday night. Five people are missing.

The search for the missing has been going on since Saturday morning, said DAAP Shrestha. A Nepal Army rescue team has reached the spot and is searching. Chairman of Barekot Village Municipality Mahendra Shah said that rescue was difficult due to bad weather. He said that the settlements including Barekot-5, Tolkhan, Kalakholi, Bhailokhan, Ward No. 4, Gothgaon, Jiri and Maina are at high risk of landslides.

According to Chairman Shah, about 60 households in those villages are at risk of landslides. Similarly, 20-year-old Shanta Bahadur Chalaune and 10-year-old Prachanda Chalaune of Dhuma in Barekot-6 have been reported missing by a local river. Locals have rescued Ram Chandra Chalaune and Vigyan Bohara from the flood in the river. Chief Administrative Officer of the village Govinda Singh informed that Ram Chandra was seriously injured.

A person has gone missing in a river in Junichande of the district. Dilli Bahadur Chanara of Junichande 11, who fell into the river after falling from a cliff, has gone missing in Sanakhola.

Similarly, Lal Bahadur of Barekot-4 has been seriously injured in a landslide. The landslide destroyed the house and he was injured while fleeing. Helicopters were said to be coming from Surkhet to rescue the two injured but could not come due to bad weather. The injured are being treated at home due to lack of treatment, said Shah. The site of the incident is 25 km northeast of Barekot, a two-day walk from Khalanga.
