China is increasingly interested in the Arctic region, which has become more accessible due to climate change. However, China is not a member of the Arctic Council, the intergovernmental forum that deals with issues related to the region. This has limited China's ability to influence policy and decision-making in the Arctic.
Despite not being a member, China has engaged with Arctic countries and has shown interest in obtaining observer status at the Arctic Council. China has also invested in Arctic infrastructure, such as shipping routes and resource extraction. It is worth noting that China's approach to the Arctic region is driven by economic and strategic interests rather than environmental considerations.
It is possible that China is not “turning a blind eye” to the Arctic region, but rather taking a more cautious approach to avoid exacerbating tensions with other Arctic nations.
