Sher Bahadur Deuba has been elected as the president of Nepali Congress for the second term.
Deuba has won the election for the post of chairman in the second phase. He defeated his nearest rival Dr. Shekhar Koirala by 878 votes. A total of 4,623 people had cast their votes in the second election. Out of them, Deuba has received 2733 votes. Koirala received 1,855 votes. Similarly, the Election Committee has stated that 35 votes were invalid.
In the by-elections held on Monday, the prime minister and incumbent party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and leader Dr Shekhar Koirala got the second highest number of votes.
In Monday's vote, Prime Minister and incumbent Deuba received 2,258 votes and his nearest rival, central member Dr Koirala, received 2,702 votes. Former General Secretary Prakash Man Singh got 371 votes, Vice President Bimalendra Nidhi got 250 votes and Central Member Kalyan Gurung got 22 votes.
In the first phase, only 4,669 out of 4,743 people had cast their votes. Out of the total voters, 64 did not cast their votes. However, in the second phase, the number decreased even more. In the second phase, only 4,562 people voted. Accordingly, 181 out of the total delegates did not vote. In the second round, Deuba was backed by Singh, Nidhi and Gurung.
After being elected, Deuba will lead the Nepali Congress for the next four years.
